Chapter 5 - The Neighbor's Secret

Back in Chesapeake, the morning sun was rising over our quiet suburban cul-de-sac, casting long golden shadows across the dew-soaked lawns. To an outsider, the neighborhood looked like a postcard of American domestic peace.

To the federal agents surrounding my home, it was a tactical operations staging ground.

Evelyn Price, my sixty-two-year-old next-door neighbor, sat at her kitchen table, her hands trembling around a mug of black coffee. I sat opposite her, flanked by Special Agent Vance. A plainclothes Chesapeake detective stood near the window, discreetly observing the street.

“I wanted to call you, Hannah,” Evelyn whispered, tears welling in her eyes. “I swear to God, I wanted to call you the day you left. But Derek… he came over here three months ago. He stood on my front porch, right where my grandchildren play, and he told me that if I ever interfered with his household, he would make sure my late husband’s military pension was revoked.”

“He threatened you?” I asked, keeping my voice gentle.

“He told me he had high-level contacts at the Department of Veterans Affairs,” Evelyn sobbed. “He showed me a folder with my husband’s service records, my social security number, everything. He said he had security clearance through your office. He told me that if I called the police or contacted you overseas, he would file a fraud complaint against my husband’s estate and have my home seized.”

Special Agent Vance wrote a notation in his ledger. “Extortion and unauthorized access of protected federal records. We can add that to the indictment.”

“What did you see three days ago, Evelyn?” I asked. “When they left for the cruise?”

Evelyn set her coffee mug down, her hands shaking so violently the liquid splashed over the rim.

“It was Tuesday morning, around six. A black SUV pulled into your driveway. Derek and Patricia came out first, carrying five large Louis Vuitton suitcases. Then Jenna came out carrying a small designer dog. Lily was standing at the front door in her pajamas. She was holding her little stuffed bear, crying, asking Derek why she couldn't come.”

My chest constricted, an agonizing weight pressing against my lungs. “What did Derek do?”

“He knelt down,” Evelyn choked out. “I was watching through my blinds. I thought he was going to hug her. But he didn't. He took her bear away from her and threw it into the back of the SUV. He told her, ‘If you leave this house, the police will lock you in a dark room forever.’ Then he shoved her backward into the foyer, pulled the heavy front door shut, and padlocked the exterior security latch.”

“The exterior security latch was unlatched when I arrived,” I noted, my voice dangerously low.

“Because I went over there after they drove away,” Evelyn cried. “I couldn't sleep, Hannah! I knew what he had threatened, but I couldn't leave that child locked in like an animal. I snuck across the yard with a crowbar and pried the exterior security latch off the frame. But the main deadbolt was locked from the inside. I tapped on the window. Lily came to the glass. She told me Daddy told her she wasn't allowed to unlock the deadbolt for anyone or the bad men would come.”

Evelyn buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with agonizing sobs. “I pushed crackers and juice boxes through the mail slot every single morning. I spoke to her through the door. I told her Mama was coming home soon. Yesterday, when I tried to slip more food through the slot, Derek answered through the Ring doorbell speaker. He told me he was watching me on the surveillance camera from the ship and that if I didn't step off the porch, he would trigger the alarm and report me for a home invasion.”

I reached across the table and took Evelyn’s frail, trembling hands into mine.

“You kept my daughter alive, Evelyn,” I said, looking directly into her eyes. “You didn't abandon her. Derek did. And I promise you, by noon today, Derek Nolan will never threaten anyone ever again.”

Agent Vance’s radio crackled on his belt.

*“Vance, this is Coast Guard Tactical Law Enforcement Team Two. The Ocean Empress has entered Puerto Rican territorial waters. Local pilot has boarded. Docking sequence begins in thirty minutes.”*

Vance pressed the talk button. “Understood. Secure the perimeter around Pier Four. The target believes he is walking out to a taxi stand. Let him clear customs processing before you execute the warrant. We want the mother and the sister in the net together.”

I stood up, adjusting my uniform jacket.

“Major,” Vance said, looking at me. “You don't need to be present for the arrest feed.”

May you like

“I’m an Army Intelligence Officer, Agent Vance,” I replied, staring at the satellite monitor mounted inside the mobile command van parked in Evelyn’s driveway. “I started this mission when I walked through that broken front door. I’m going to watch it end.”
