Chapter 5 - The Traitor's Voice

The memory hit me with such violent clarity that my hand flew to my mouth to stifle a gasp.

I closed my eyes, dragging myself back to that terrible night at *L’Aura d’Or*, sixty seconds before Dominic had collapsed.

I hadn't been watching Dominic the entire time. Before the glass had shattered, before Richard had grabbed my arm, I had been standing near the sommelier's station, polishing the silverware.

A man had stepped out of the private kitchen hallway—not a regular line cook, and not our usual wine distributor. He was tall, wearing a crisp dark suit beneath a heavy trench coat. He had handed the uncorked bottle of 1982 Barolo directly to Richard with a whispered instruction.

Richard had looked terrified, his hands trembling as he took the bottle.

The man in the trench coat had reached out to steady Richard's wrist. And when the sleeve of his coat had ridden up against the dim light of the hallway sconce, I had seen it clearly: a heavy gold cufflink shaped like an anchor wrapped in a coiled serpent, with a single black diamond set into the eye of the snake.

It wasn't an ordinary piece of jewelry. It was custom, distinctive, and completely unforgettable.

"Who's there?"

A voice like thunder shattered my thoughts.

The heavy mahogany door of the study swung open violently.

Dominic stood in the doorway, his silhouette backlit by the green banker's lamp on his massive desk. His hand rested on the grip of the pistol tucked into his waistband, his gray eyes blazing with lethal readiness.

When he saw it was me, the tension in his shoulders didn't relax, but his hand slowly lowered from his weapon.

"Chloe," he said, his brows pulling together in a dark frown. "What are you doing wandering the halls at this hour?"

Behind him, Enzo appeared, his face tight with furious suspicion. "She was listening at the door, Dominic. I warned you. She knows too much."

"I wasn't spying!" I said quickly, stepping backward, my heart pounding against my ribs. "I couldn't sleep. I just... I wanted some air. But I heard what you said about the distributor. About the wine bottle."

Dominic stepped out into the gallery, closing the distance between us until he stood just inches away. His presence was overwhelming, a towering wall of quiet intensity. "What about the wine bottle, Chloe?"

"The night you were poisoned," I stammered, looking up into his fierce eyes. "Richard didn't fetch that wine from the cellar. A man brought it to him through the back kitchen entrance. I saw him."

Enzo let out a sharp, derisive scoff. "Now she claims to have seen the courier. How convenient. You're trying to make yourself indispensable, Miss Henderson, so Dominic won't put you on a plane to a remote safehouse."

"Shut up, Enzo," Dominic commanded without looking back. His eyes remained locked on mine, searching every micro-expression on my face. "Describe him, Chloe."

"He was tall. Broad-shouldered, like you, but older. His hair was silver at the sides, combed back," I said, my voice gathering strength as the image sharpened in my memory. "He wore a black cashmere trench coat. But it was his cufflink—I saw it when he handed the bottle to Richard. It was heavy gold. An anchor with a serpent coiled around the shaft, and a black stone in the snake's head."

Enzo gasped, taking an involuntary step backward. All the color drained completely from his face, leaving him as pale as a corpse.

Dominic didn't gasp. He didn't move. But a terrifying, arctic stillness settled over him. It was the kind of stillness that precedes an earthquake—a quiet so profound it felt like the air itself had turned to glass.

"An anchor and a serpent," Dominic whispered, his voice dangerously low. "With a black diamond."

"You know who it is," I whispered, shivering despite the thick robe.

"Salvatore Vane," Enzo uttered, his hands visibly shaking as he gripped the edge of the mahogany doorframe. "Your uncle. The head of the North End port authority. He's the only one who wears the Vane family crest on his cufflinks."

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Salvatore Vane wasn't just a lieutenant on the High Council. He was Dominic’s late mother’s older brother—the man who had reportedly helped Dominic take control of the Romano empire ten years ago after Dominic’s father had been murdered.

"Salvatore," Dominic said, rolling the name on his tongue like poison. "My own blood."

"If Salvatore is behind this," Enzo warned, his voice cracking with rising hysteria, "then he doesn't just want you dead, Dominic. He’s already made a pact with the families in New York and Chicago. He has secured the docks, the shipping routes, the private security contractors. Tomorrow night's Council meeting isn't an inquiry. It's a coronation. If you walk into that boardroom, every gun in that room will be pointed at your chest!"

"Then I will not walk in unprepared," Dominic replied, his voice chillingly devoid of fear.

He turned back to me. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently touching the side of my face, brushing a stray lock of brown hair behind my ear. The touch was so tender, so at odds with the violent world around us, that a shiver ran down my spine.

"You saved my life twice, Chloe Henderson," he murmured, his slate eyes burning with an intense, intoxicating fire. "First with your courage. Now with your memory."

Before I could reply, the mansion’s primary power grid suddenly snapped off.

The entire estate plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

A split second later, the deep, mechanical wail of the emergency defense klaxons erupted through the walls, screaming like a dying animal. The heavy steel storm shutters on the gallery windows began slamming down automatically with deafening, metallic crashes.

Red emergency strobe lights flickered to life along the baseboards, bathing the corridor in the color of fresh arterial blood.

Marco’s frantic voice exploded through Dominic’s ear-piece, loud enough for both of us to hear:

*"Boss! We have a breach! Perimeter sensors on the north cliff were bypassed using high-level family security clearance codes! The estate power has been severed at the main substation! We have three tactical transport choppers inbound directly over the bay, and ground vehicles are smashing through the lower gates! It’s Salvatore! He’s here to finish the job!"*

A massive explosion rattled the very foundations of the limestone mansion, sending a shockwave through the floor that nearly knocked me off my feet.

Dominic caught me around the waist, pulling me hard against his chest. With his other hand, he drew his weapon, his jaw set in a line of lethal, unyielding fury.

May you like

He looked down into my terrified eyes, the red strobe lights painting his sharp features in crimson shadows.

"Stay beside me, Chloe," Dominic said, cocking the slide of his gun with a cold, metallic snap. "Tonight, we burn them all down."
