Chapter 7 - A Trap in the Dark

Julian pulled a sleek, black semi-automatic pistol from his jacket, leveling the barrel straight at Vincent's chest.

Dr. Blake gasped, stumbling backward against the sofa, his hands trembling violently. "Julian! No! You said this would look natural! You said no violence!"

"Shut up, Harrison!" Julian snarled, his eyes burning with frantic madness. "The game is over. David Miller went to the feds the second he verified that compound. Do you think Vincent is going to let either of us walk out of this house alive?"

Vincent didn't raise his hands. He didn't even flinch. He stood behind his desk, looking at his cousin with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.

"You killed Isabella," Vincent stated, not as a question, but as a chilling realization. "Her car accident four years ago. The brake line failure that the state police couldn't explain."

Julian’s lips curled into a cold, psychotic smirk. "She was whispering in your ear, convincing you to put the company into an irrevocable trust for the boys. Cutting me out. Cutting the board out. She had to go. But you... you wouldn't break, Vincent. Even after her death, you kept running everything. The only way to break you was to take the boys."

"They're children, Julian!" I screamed, stepping forward, every maternal and protective instinct in my body flaring into overdrive. "They're your own blood!"

"They are an obstacle!" Julian barked, swinging the gun toward me. "And you... you stupid, meddling bitch. If you hadn't stuck your nose into that vent, the boys would have quietly slipped away in a hospital bed by next week, and you would have collected a fat severance check!"

"Julian, look at me," Vincent commanded, his voice deadly steady, drawing the gun’s aim back toward himself. "This ends between us. Let Claire go to the boys. Leave the children out of this."

"None of you are leaving this house," Julian whispered. He reached into his pocket with his left hand, pulling out a small radio transmitter. "The transport team waiting at the front gate? They don't work for St. Jude. They’re private security on my payroll. By tomorrow morning, this mansion will have suffered a catastrophic gas explosion. A tragic tragedy caused by a faulty boiler. The grieving father, his sick sons, and the incompetent nanny... all gone."

Before Julian could press the button on the transmitter, the heavy study doors burst open with explosive force.

"Drop the weapon!"

Two heavily armed men in black tactical gear with Federal Bureau of Investigation insignias breached the doorway, their assault rifles raised, laser sights painting bright red dots across Julian’s chest and forehead. Behind them stood Mrs. Harper, in tears, flanked by two more federal agents.

Julian froze.

"Drop it! Now!" the lead agent roared.

Blake instantly dropped to his knees, his hands behind his head, sobbing hysterically. "I confess! I confess everything! It was Julian! He paid me! He provided the compound!"

Julian’s face twisted in pure, animal fury. Realizing he had lost, he didn't lower his gun. Instead, his finger tightened around the trigger, aiming directly between Vincent's eyes.

"If I burn, you burn with me, Vincent!"

*BANG!*

The gunshot was deafening inside the enclosed study.

I didn't think. I lunged forward, throwing myself toward Vincent, but the tactical team fired simultaneously. Julian’s body jerked violently as three high-caliber rounds struck his torso. His gun fired wildly into the ornate ceiling, sending plaster raining down like snow, before he collapsed onto the Persian rug, the transmitter slipping from his limp fingers.

Smoke hung heavy in the air, smelling of cordite and burnt gunpowder.

Agents swarmed the room, securing Blake, checking Julian’s nonexistent pulse, and sweeping the perimeter.

"Perimeter secure! Clear!"

I was on my knees on the floor, gasping for air, my ears ringing violently.

Through the haze of smoke, two strong hands gripped my shoulders, lifting me effortlessly to my feet.

"Claire. Claire, are you hit?"

I looked up into Vincent's face. The terrifying billionaire was gone. In his place was a man trembling with adrenaline, his eyes searching my body with frantic, desperate concern.

"I’m... I'm okay," I coughed, my voice shaking. "I’m not hit. The boys... Vincent, the boys!"

May you like

"They're safe," Vincent said, pulling me into a fierce, protective embrace against his chest. I could feel the thundering rhythm of his heart beneath his suit. "I had federal agents secure their wing ten minutes before Julian walked into this room. Harper confessed to the U.S. Attorney’s office an hour ago. It’s over, Claire. It’s over."
